We did some hard work October 27th in the Edgewater neighborhood! Thanks to the help of volunteers, we were able to plant 18 new trees throughout the community area. Together we planted 6 Bur Oak, 6 Chinquapin Oak, 3 Kentucky Coffeetree, 2 Black Gum and 1 Northern Red Oak.
These are all species native to Illinois that are well adapted to our local climate and will increase the resiliency of your neighborhood in the face of climate change. As they mature, the value of their benefits will increase as they cool our city, reduce flooding, protect our water resources and improves the air quality of the surrounding area.
In total, the 22 volunteers that came out provided 66 hours of dedicated labor. Congratulations on an impressive outpouring of support!
Special thanks to the Tom Ebeling and the Openlands Crew, Renee Patten, Nina Newhouser and Steve Meiss with the Edgewater Environmental Commission for seeking the TreePlanters grant and coordinating the outstanding volunteer effort! We would also like to thank Tricia Van Eck at 6018 North for opening up her space to our group and coordinating the care of the trees on N. Kenmore Ave. Last but certainly not least, we would like to thank Oak Street Health for funding this project and our friends at CRTI for their coordination efforts. Thank you everyone and well done!

It's so wonderful to see all the lovely new trees walking around! The game plan was great, volunteers were happy, and trees are getting love!
One recipient also sent this note: "Again, many, many thanks to you and the team for all your efforts on behalf of the community. I really appreciate the great job you did today planting the trees."
It was a pleasure working with you and the entire Openlands crew, and we are thrilled to have so many new trees in our neighborhood. We look forward to working with you on future tree planting projects.
